Richard Scheaffer

(From Parker Mortuary)

Richard Daniel Scheaffer passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 20th, 2024 at Carthage Health and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, MO.

Richard was born on March 5th, 1939 in Enterprise, KS from the union of Melvin Henry Scheaffer and Marie Eileene Wiles. He was proceeded in death by six siblings: Mary Margaret, Ruth Lillian, Joann Rita, Donald (Don} Eugene (Margaret), Harold William (Karen), Eileen Cecilia Conseco (Joe).

Richard graduated from Dickinson County High School in Chapman, KS in 1957 where he participated in multiple sports, lettering in basketball. Richard attended Benedictine College in Atchison, KS majoring in science but decided he would rather marry the love of his life, Mary Lou Crandall. They were united in marriage on April 30, 1959 at St Andrews Catholic Church in Abilene, KS.

From this union were born five children: Kevin Matthew, Denise Marie Abreu (Fernando), Mark Daniel (Julie), Michael John (Kimberly) and Thomas Luke. Richard was an extremely hard working, caring and dependable gentle gentleman. He always made time to support his family’s needs while maintaining a handful of Dad/Grandpa jokes in hand. Richard had an uncanny ability to find the most obscure items that we didn’t understand until we came up with an equally obscure problem that he had just the tool to do the job. He loved to putter when he had any extra time. He filled the garage with love and there was a lot of love.

Mary Lou brought to Richard’s life in-laws Joyce DeHaven (Robert), Judy Holman (Kenneth), John Crandall (Jeanne) and Donna Reyolds (Scott).

Richard traveled extensively throughout Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma for much of his career in sales. Although this kept him away from home during the week he made the effort to call home every night and be home on the weekends. Richard held positions at iconic retailer Montgomery Ward and won many awards as a door-to-door salesman for Fuller Brush. Richard was a master at relationships having mastered the methods Dale Carnegie’s “How To Win Friends and Influence People”. Richard’s work at Roberts Enterprises, Central Chemical Company, Superior Specialties and Equiparts left him with clients who became friends and still call because they only want to deal with him Richard also worked in retirement at Lowes and H&R Block.

As his children left the nest he and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling across the country to attend family events (weddings, birthdays, graduations, funerals and holidays). Richard leaves behind seven grandchildren: Jeremiah Joseph Abreu (Jodi Middleton Piazza), Gregory Daniel (Nicole), Sally Anne Roub (Tyler), Ellie Kate, Catherine Irene, Nathan Diego and Kyah Sage. He also leaves behind two great grandchildren: Atlas Joseph Abreu and Lily Rose Scheaffer. Nieces and nephews include Andrew Scheaffer (Leslie, Ben, Hudson and Sophia), Don Price, Dan Price, Theresa Price, Bobby Price (deceased), Audrey Kidd, Denise Scheaffer, Jean Scheaffer, Suzanne Scheaffer, Annette Scheaffer, Erin Canseco, Jessica Tobias (Dennard), Nicholle Marie Tobias (deceased), Harley Tobias, Melvin Canseco (deceased), Cristina Canseco, Ethan Canseco-Voight, Todd DeHaven, Haley Caplan (DeHaven), Eric DeHaven, Kylie DeHaven, Dylan DeHaven, Angela Holman (Daigle), Kevin Griggs, Elizabeth Griggs, Sonia Holman (Terrill), Ryan Terrill, Bailey Terrill, Marcia Holman (Edmonds), Hunter Edmonds, Kaelyn Edmonds, Audrey Edmonds, Katherine Crandall (Toler), Margaret Crandall (Bradley), Joshua Reynolds (Beth), Keira Reynolds, Aiden Reynolds, Sean Reynolds (Nicole), Finley Reynolds, Tully Reynolds and Oliver Reynolds.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion and unmatched ethics. Richard was a people person who was a true example of a good Christian man. Richard’s health issues in his last few years kept him

from what he enjoyed most; being with people. He is our hero. We can only strive to be as caring of human beings as he was.

A funeral mass will be at 10 am on Friday, January 26, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miami, OK. Private interment will occur at a later date.
