(From Ozark Funeral Home)James Andrew Russell, age 76, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday morning, January 28, 2024, from complications of a recent stroke.
Born on February 24, 1947, in Goodman, Missouri, Jim's life was marked by his loving nature, kindness, and intelligence, traits that endeared him to all who knew him.
Raised in Kansas City, Kansas, Jim graduated from high school in 1965 and went on to serve his country faithfully in the United States Army. His patriotism was a cornerstone of his character, a quality that remained with him throughout his life. After his military service, Jim built a successful career at Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 2006 as an engineer. His work was not just a job but a passion, as Jim had a lifelong love for trains.
Jim's interests were as varied as they were deep. A devout member of New Grace Assembly in Oronogo, Missouri, his faith was a source of strength and comfort. His love for traveling took him to many places, creating memories that he cherished. An avid reader, Jim was always in the middle of a new book, eager to learn and explore the world through the written word. His fondness for animals showcased his compassionate spirit, and his smart use of YouTube to discover and share knowledge reflected his adaptability and curiosity.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as a very caring man. His intelligence shone through in his thoughtful conversations and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His kindness was felt by many, from his close-knit family to the wider community he impacted.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Gene Madison and Twyla Marie (Reardon) Russell; his sister, Audean Kaiser; and his nephew, Michael Kaiser. His legacy lives on through his family, including his two nieces, Annette Haughton and her husband, John, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Amanda Kaiser of Walford, Iowa; three great-nephews, Thomas Haughton, J.T. Corbett, and Marcus Corbett; and a great-niece, Kayleigh Haughton; two great-great-nieces and a great-great-nephew. A host of cousins and extended family members also survive him, each carrying a piece of Jim's spirit in their hearts.
Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024 in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Pastor Marilyn O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow in Howard Cemetery in Goodman, Missouri. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Missouri.
