Nina M. Simpson, age 87, Columbus, Kansas, formerly of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Freeman West.
Nina was born May 30, 1932 in Barton County, Missouri, daughter of the late Arthur and Tina Bray. She grew up in Lamar and Kansas City, and worked for years with the Joplin Family Workshop where she met Harvey Robert "Bob" Simpson. The couple was married, and enjoyed many years together until he preceded her in death on July 30, 2003. She was residing at the Greenbriar Nursing Center in Joplin when the Tornado of 2011 hit her home. She was transferred to Columbus, Kansas, and has been there since then. She was a frequent patron of the 7th Street Wal-Mart where she had many friends.
Nina was blind her entire life, but still had a positive outlook on life. She taught herself how to play the piano and harmonica, and how to sew. She loved music, both playing and listening, and she made the majority of her outfits. She was known for helping others through her thoughtfulness, and generosity. She will be greatly missed by all who got the chance to know her.
Survivors include her caregivers, Kathy Ingram Wammack, Cindy Jackson, and Ginger Dopps, all of Joplin.
Graveside services will be Friday, August 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Alan McCamey officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
