Wanda Hedrick

Wanda Hedrick, 85, of Jay, Oklahoma passed away on August 16, 2019, at the Communities of Wildwood, Joplin, MO. She was born on March 22, 1934. Wanda was the daughter of John and Edith (Mowery) Carter.

She married Robert E. Hedrick on April 4, 1952. They were blessed with 6 children; Tish, Darlena, Tammy, Bobby, Melody, and Roger. She graduated from Jay High School and earned her bachelor’s degree at Northeastern University of Oklahoma. Wanda worked the majority of her life. She was a surgical nurse at Jay Seventh-Day Adventist Hospital for many years. She then worked at the Parsons Ammunition Plant in Parsons, KS. After that, she was the Director of the Jay Ambulance Dept. from which she retired. She came out of retirement and worked as weekend “house mother” for the Delaware County Friendship Home and remained there until she was 82 years old. 

In the midst of working, she was also an award-winning Avon sales representative for many years. She did not do it for the income, but as a hobby that she loved. This gave her the opportunity to meet and befriend many people. She loved her church, flowers, and doing Suduko puzzles. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family.








She is survived by 5 children; Tish (Jim) Waddell of Joplin, MO, Tammy (Wayne) Rottau of Troy, MO, Bobby (Ruth) Hedrick of Davenport, IA, Melody Hedrick of Jay, OK, and Roger (Terri) Hedrick of Moline, IL. Wanda had 10 grandchildren; Zackary Waddell, Chelsey Waddell McCutcheon, Garrett Rottau, Ashley (Joe) Stewart, Jeremy (Allison) and Jessica Hedrick, Clinton, Mackenzie, and Erica Hedrick, and Marci Byrd.

She had 12 great-grandchildren; Grayson, Kutter, Jordyn, Daevanie, Gunner, Rhett, baby boy to be, Clarke, Trinity, Gianna, Lilah, and Stella. Her surviving siblings are Frank (Faith) Carter of Hillsdale, IL, Deta (Dwight) Hogan of Locust Grove, OK. Sister- in-laws; Lavon (wife of the late Gene Carter), Lora (wife of the late Dale Carter).

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edith Carter; her siblings; Gene Carter, June Morrow, Dale and Bill Carter, and Gypsy Butler; her precious daughter Darlena, and her granddaughter Chelsey Waddell McCutcheon.

Services will be held at Church of Christ at 3rd & Cherokee, Jay, OK, on Saturday, August 24th at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wanda Hedrick Memorial fund at the Parker Mortuary, 1502 S. Joplin Ave., Joplin, MO. 64804.
