David Leroy Gilbreth, 80, departed this life suddenly, on a beautiful September morning, after a sudden illness at his Neosho home.
David entered this life in 1937 in Joplin, Missouri. He was the youngest son of Roy and Genevieve Gilbreth and, like his seven siblings, attended school at St. Peter’s Catholic School in Joplin, Missouri. He was united in marriage to Carlotta Sue Blizzard on September 7, 1957. From this union four children were born. David also served for many years with the Army National Guard. While he spent most of his life in Joplin, David spent six years with his family in Clarinda, Iowa. After their family home was destroyed by the 2011 Joplin tornado David and his wife relocated to Neosho, Missouri.
David received an Associates degree from Joplin Junior College; a B.S.B.A. from Missouri Southern State College; and, participated in graduate studies at Drury University. David worked as an accountant throughout his professional life. Over the years he worked for Rocketdyne, The Parsons Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, FAG Bearing and NSK Bearing. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, attended the St. Canera Catholic Church and was a member of the Ostomy Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
David is survived by his wife of sixty years, his beloved Sue. He leaves behind to honor his memory four children and their spouses, David Greg Gilbreth and wife, Cindy; Gretchen Powell; Kelly Cooper and husband, Duane; and, James Kent Gilbreth. Also celebrating his life are eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; his brother, Jim Gilbreth, and wife, Patty; and his sister, Patty Roche. He will be greatly missed by his beloved dog, Sophie.
David loved fishing and caught some of the biggest bass you never saw. He was also an avid golfer; playing pretty much scratch if you let him handle the score card. He truly enjoyed making homemade wine with his brother, Jim, and, made more of it than the Gallo brothers. He loved the church and St. Louis baseball. His two favorite Cardinals were the Pope and Stan Musial. His children and grandchildren loved his stories, both the tall ones and the true ones. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, and, they with him.
We, his family, rejoice in the extraordinary life he was privileged to live. We feel grateful and blessed to have been loved by such an amazing human being.
A Rosary will be held on Monday, September, 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri, with Father Derek Swanson officiating. Visitation will follow from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. on that date. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Canera Catholic Church located at 504 S. Washington Street, Neosho, Missouri. Memorials are being directed to St. Canera Catholic Church and Faithful Friends Animal Advocates, Inc. Donations may be left at the mortuary.
