Leta Hawkinson

Leta Wilma Hawkinson, age 97, passed away at 6:00 am, Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, MO.

Mrs. Hawkinson was born February 13, 1924 in Baxter Springs. Her parents were Owen William and Ola T (Hayhurst) Thompson. She was a lifetime resident of Baxter Springs.

She graduated from Baxter Springs High School with the class of 1942. For several years, Leta was the church secretary at her church, the First Christian Church of Baxter Springs. 








Throughout all stages of her life, she loved taking road trips across this country and seeing all it had to offer and was proud to have visited all 48 states in the continental US and most of the provinces of Canada. She had volunteered with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizen’s building to play dominoes and gin rummy. She liked square dancing and going to the casinos. She loved watching sports, especially when she could root for her Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Her favorite entertainment was spending time with her family, especially while with her grandkids and great grandkids. Visiting their homes and attending their sport’s games were always highlights for her. She delighted in all the friends she made everywhere she went and the animals God put on this earth.

Leta was married to her best friend, Samuel C. “Chet” Hawkinson on November 1, 1943. He passed away October 5, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son Bobby Lee Hawkinson, and three brothers.

Surviving is one daughter, Jean (Roger) Fleming of Joplin, MO; 4 grandchildren, Ryan (Abi) Fleming of Overland Park, KS, Kristen (Brett) Hergenrother of Ballwin, MO, Rob Hawkinson of Charlotte, NC, and Damon (Monica) Hawkinson of Lakeland, FL; 10 great-grandchildren, Sydney (Bailey) Duston, Joe Hawkinson, Nathan Hergenrother, Katie Hergenrother, Will Fleming, Andrew Hergenrother, Lia Fleming, Jack Hergenrother, Charlee Hawkinson, and Abby Hawkinson, and one great-great grandchild, Harper Duston of Locust, NC.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, March 26, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 3035 S. Central City Rd., Joplin, MO 64804 with Father Joe Weidenbenner officiating. Reverend Ronald Keith will reside at burial in Lowell Cemetery, Baxter Springs. Mask will be required at the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Wounded Warriors or St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in care of the funeral home.
