Jim O'Reilly

(From Parker Mortuary)

James “Jim” Martin O’Reilly, age 77, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at his home in Joplin.

Jim was born December 14, 1946, in San Luis Obispo where he grew up and attended San Luis Obispo High School. Jim attended college at Cal Poly where he was on the swim team and eventually obtained his B.S. in Sociology.

Jim married Robin K McAvoy on June 4, 1977. They remained married for over 46 years until his death. Together they had four children whom they raised in Chico, CA and then in Joplin, MO.

Jim held several jobs over the years, but the work he enjoyed the most was caring for his pets and being Papa to his grandchildren. He was a history buff and was very into economics and politics. He was always mindful about how the past affects the present and future. He loved being outdoors, camping in the mountains or on the beach, and canoeing. He was of the Catholic faith which became more important to him following the death of his son in October 2023.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett Martin and Laura Louise (Mullins) O’Reilly and recently his son, Patrick James O’Reilly.

Survivors include his wife, Robin; children, Robert O’Reilly (Marsha) of Springfield, MO, Jaime O’Reilly of Joplin, and Ryan O’Reilly (LeAnn) of Carl Junction, MO; stepson Michael Brannan of Chico, CA; grandchildren, Avila, Marlon, James, Norah, Stevie, Emmett, and Miles. Brother, Roderick (Kathy) O’Reilly of Redding, CA. Sister, Elena O’Reilly of San Luis Obispo. Also, several nieces and nephews.
