(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)Carter Leffen was born on November 30, 1949, in Bethesda, Maryland, to John and Collette (Carter) Leffen.
After graduating high school, Carter enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country faithfully and took on many roles during his time in service. Following his time in the military, he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Missouri Southern State College.
Carter began his career as a history teacher at Joplin High School in the 1970s and 1980s, where he shared his passion for the past and its connection to the present. Later, he stepped away from teaching to become a full-time caregiver for his parents, a role he embraced. He briefly returned to teaching in the 2000s before ultimately retiring to once again care for his mother.
Beyond the classroom, Carter was a gifted speech writer and a lifelong student of politics and current events. Whether debating an issue, sharing a historical insight, or simply exchanging ideas, he found connection through conversation.
Carter enjoyed traveling, photography, playing tennis, and writing.
In addition to his parents, Carter was preceded in death by his brother, John Leffen.
He is survived by his two children, Carter Leffen Jr. and his wife, Kathryn Michelle, and Kat Leffen-Rogers and her husband, Phillip Rogers; and by his granddaughter, Grace Collette Leffen.
Cremation arrangements are under the special care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary.
