Mr. Lawrence Eugene “Gene” Barnes, 89, of Anderson, Missouri, departed this life on Sunday evening, May 1, 2016, while at Freeman Hospital in Neosho, Missouri, after a recent decline in health.
Gene entered this life on July 6, 1926, in Anderson, Missouri, one of seven children born to the late Lawrence Leslie “L.L.” and Ida (Bell) Barnes. He was a lifelong resident of Anderson, Missouri and a 1944 graduate of Anderson High School. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army during WW-II. After being honorably discharged he returned home to Anderson and joined his father in the family business, L.L. Barnes Chevrolet. On October 27, 1946, in Southwest City, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Glenna Charlene Robinson and to this union a son and daughter were born. In 1979 he decided to close the family dealership and in 1980 Gene began employment with Griffith Motor Company in Neosho, retiring in 1998. He served on the Anderson City Council from 1948 to 1976, the Anderson Lions Club, as well as numerous other civic organizations. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping and was a faithful attendee of the “Anderson College of Knowledge” for their daily roundtable discussions at Stang’s Travel Center. Gene was a member of the Anderson First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of sixty-four years, Glenna Barnes on October 22, 2010; one brother, John Barnes; four sisters, Mary Bell Stone, Nancy Ruth Goff, Helen Hillyard and Margaret Roark; and a great granddaughter, Anna Bormann.
Gene is survived by his two children, Dr. Larry Barnes and wife, Vickie, of Neosho, Missouri and Ann Thompson and husband, Mike, of Grove, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Kimberly Betts, Kelly Bormann, Dr. Lindsey Barnes, Rachel Dobbs, Michael Barnes and Alex Barnes; six great grandchildren; one brother, Bill Barnes and wife, Linda, of Anderson, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Memorial services for Mr. Barnes are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016, in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Rev. Dr. Sara Chaney officiating. Dr. Larry Barnes will be rendering the eulogy. In lieu of flowers memorials are being directed to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation for the Anna Bormann Research Fund and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
