Johnny Hegeman

John (Johnny) J. Hegeman, 82, of Joplin, departed this life Saturday afternoon, May 14, 2016 at Mercy Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born August 15, 1933 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he was the son of the late John and Hattie Ruffer Hegeman. He had lived in Joplin since the age of 2.

John was a 1951 graduate of St. Peter's High School. After graduation, he served in the United States Army with the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. He was employed by the former Pennington Drug Company for 26 years. In 1978, he became co-owner of a computer software company servicing retail pharmacies, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Elk's Lodge #501, American legion Post #13 and a former volunteer for St. John's Hospital.

On May 4th, 1957 John married Phyllis Wilbur in Joplin and to this union two children were born.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Hegeman; son, Michael Hegeman, Monkey Island, Oklahoma, daughter, Janice Ferguson and her husband, Mark, Neosho; two sisters, Agnes Elbert and Selma Hegeman, both of Joplin; and three grandchildren, Alexandra Reed and her husband, Caleb, Ryan and Derek Ferguson.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Molitor.

A prayer service is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a visitation to follow until 7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 3035 S. Central City Road, Joplin. Father Justin Monaghan will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
