Shirley Peterson

Shirley Eva Peterson, 78 of Joplin, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Joplin Health and Rehab following an extended illness.

Shirley was born March 9, 1938 in Peoria, Oklahoma to the late William F. Stasell and Doris Itila Stasell. She was a graduate of Quapaw High School and soon married thereafter. Shirley retired from La-Z-Boy as a seamstress and also worked at King Louie for a period of time. She was a member of both the Order of the Eastern Star and Grace Baptist Church of Joplin where the ladies got her interested in the Gaither's musical group and Shirley was an avid Cardinals fan.

On July 28, 1956, Shirley married Howard L. Peterson in Miami, Oklahoma and was married for 55 years. He preceded her in death on October 22, 2011. Additionally, Shirley is preceded in death by a son in-law, Michael Anderson, grandson in-law, Bryan Gunn.

Survivors include daughters, Sheryl Naaykens of Joplin, Joyce Cooper and husband, Steve of Carl Junction, Connie White and husband, Al of Joplin and Debra Anderson of Joplin; brothers, Jesse Stasell and wife, Barbara, Budge Stasell and wife, Mic, John Stasell and wife, Phyllis, all of Peoria; sister, Grace Kropp and husband, Terry of Quapaw; 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; cousin, Dorothy Amphlett of Miami and a brother in-law, Paul and his wife, Sherry Peterson of Joplin; plus many extended family and friends.

Funeral services are planned for Monday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, Joplin. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-5:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Children's Hospital or Grace Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
