Lawrence Michael "Hippie" Murphy, age 65, Joplin, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at his home.
Michael was born July 12, 1952 in Daly City, California, son of the late Lawrence Daniel Murphy and Virginia Gloria Cordell Murphy. He grew up in Truckee, California where he graduated from high school. He served in the United States Army, and worked as a pipe fitter, installing sprinkler systems in California. He then began his career as a truck driver, starting out as an owner/operator of his own truck, and then moving to Joplin in 1984 where he worked for Sitton Motor Lines, and C.F.I. for years.
Hippie was always bringing fun to the party. He loved music, and was a gifted drummer, playing for several local bands. He enjoyed riding his motorcycles, and often rode with a group of friends doing fund raisers for several charities, including the M.D.A.
In addition to his parents, Hippie was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle R. Murphy, and a sister, Sandra Murphy.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Christine Perreira Murphy; children, Timothy Lee Murphy of Alaska, LaVena Murphy of Joplin, Michael R. Murphy of Carl Junction, Missouri, and Ileah R. Murphy Adams of Joplin; five grandchildren, Zoe R. Adams, Wyatt Cable, Bentley R. Chadwick-Murphy, Emma Adams, and Gracie Cable; brother, David Murphy of Joplin; sister, Sharon Mahan of Longview, Texas; niece, Samantha Murphy of Joplin; nephews, Daniel Murphy, David Mahan, James Mahan, Eugene Daniel Mahan all of Oklahoma.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
Inurnment of his ashes will be held at a later date in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with his parents.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the family to help with final expenses.
