Mary E. (Strawn) Smith, 84, of Pittsburg went to her heavenly home on July 11, 2018. She was born on June 12, 1934 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Dr. Robertson Strawn and Dorothy (Martin) Strawn.
She married Sam L. Smith on August 21, 1954 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS. He proceeded her in death on August 12, 2002. Mary later married Newton Spilman on May 19, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes. He proceeded her in death on January 8, 2014. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes.
Mary graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1952. She went on to Pittsburg State University formally known as Kansas State Teacher’s College of Pittsburg. She taught elementary grade school in Oronogo, Missouri and in Arma, Kansas. After Mary and Sam got married she become a devoted wife and mother to 10 children. Later in her life she joined her husband and assisted in the operations of running the family business Smith’s Cycle Center. Upon her husband Sam’s death Mary took over operations of Smith’s Cycle Center and worked up until 2017. In her spare time Mary loved to travel, casinos, genealogy and spending time with her family. Anyone who knew Mary knew that she was a kind and giving soul.
Survivors include Mary’s children, Samuel L. Smith Jr., of Pittsburg, Diana Convirs, of Pittsburg, John R. Smith, of Pittsburg, Robert L. Smith, of Pittsburg, James E. Smith, of East Peoria, Illinois, David J. Smith (Donna), of Frontenac, Michael A. Smith (Krista), of Pittsburg, and Shawn C. Smith, of Overland Park, Kansas. Mary’s sister Elizabeth Erickson (Lynn), of Stockton, Missouri. Mary has 16 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Mary was proceeded in death by two of her daughters, Loretta Crowe and Deborah Miller, her parents, brothers John Strawn and Bob Strawn and a sister Susie Means.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Tuesday July 17, 2018 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Jorge Lopez and Fr. Clay Kimbro as celebrants. Burial will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS. Rosary will be recited at 6:00pm Monday July 16, 2018 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, KS; family will receive friends following the rosary until 8:00pm. Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS 66762.
