Ernest David “Mac” McElhaney, 81, of Joplin, and a former Parsons resident, passed away peacefully at 9:08 p.m., Monday, October 8, 2018 at his home.
He was born July 13, 1937, in Parsons, to Virgil M. and Ida A. (Newkirk) McElhaney. He grew up and attended school in Parsons.
On March 25, 1967 he and Mary Ellen Racy were married in Topeka. She preceded him in death on December 4, 1991.
He was the owner and operator of McElhaney’s Roofing in Parsons for several years. In his early years he was employed at the McElhaney Ice Company in Parsons. His interests included hunting and fishing.
Ernest is survived by his son, Davide Ernest McElhaney and wife Sharon, of Seneca, MO; his daughter Darlene Marie Wingrove and husband Ronald of Galva, KS; five grandchildren, Diana Rivera, McPherson, KS, Christa Lawson, and her husband, Brad, Linsborg, KS, Dallas Dilli, Hutchinson, Angela Sims, Hutchinson, KS, John McElhaney, Joplin, MO; 10 great-grandchildren, Rylee and Justin Lawson, Kendra and Kayleigh Dilli, Isaiah Rivera, Olivia Thrash, Dylan, Dakota and Caitlyn McElhaney, and Lillyana Sims; several sisters, including Kay Fry, of Topeka and Loretta Smith of Oklahoma City. Preceding him in death were a great-granddaughter, Aryana Sims; brothers Butch McElhaney and infant Raymond McElhaney and sisters Florence Taylor and Diana Smith.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at the Springhill Cemetery Patio in Parsons with Rev. Steve Crawford officiatging. Friends may call at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home at their convenience on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
