Richard Stevens

Mr. Richard Leon Stevens, 92, of Sarcoxie, Missouri departed this life on Sunday morning, October 28, 2018 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

Richard entered this life on August 6, 1926 in Andersonville, Indiana to the union of the late Clennie and Mary (Linville) Stevens. He was a graduate of Andersonville High School and later attended technical school. He proudly served in the Army Air Corp. during WWII, returning home in 1945.

On April 10, 1954 he was united in marriage to Sophia Hignite, together they shared fifty-seven years until her passing on October 16, 2011. He and Sophia came to Wentworth, Missouri in 1972 from California and later moved to Sarcoxie. Richard retired as a draftsman from Mid-Western Machinery in Joplin, Missouri. After retirement he was a volunteer driver for meals-on-wheels and was a tour guide for George Washington Carver Monument. Richard was a member of the Church of God Seventh Day in Joplin, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sophia; grandson, Matthew Stevens; brother, John Stevens; sisters, Pricilla Alford, Elizabeth Wicker and Naomi Martin.

Richard is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Mettlach of Sarcoxie, Missouri; a son, Mark Stevens of Neosho, Missouri; five grandchildren; two great granddaughters; one great grandson; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Graveside funeral services with full military honors for Mr. Stevens are 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Sarcoxie Cemetery in Sarcoxie, Missouri with Pastor Vernon Peterson officiating. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Mark Stevens, Justin Mettlach, Jeremy Gardner, Vodel Fox, Lloyd Walker and Vernon Peterson.
