Eugene Marti

Eugene George Marti of Sabetha, died on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, at the Apostolic Christian Nursing Home in Sabetha.

He was born in Lamar, Mo., on July 14, 1930, the son of George and Elizabeth (Banwart) Marti. When Eugene was 10 years old, his father died and the family moved to Fort Scott, and later moved to Sabetha when he was a sophomore in high school.

Eugene graduated from Sabetha High School in 1948. After high school, he worked at the Ford Motor Company in Sabetha and then left to serve in the Air Force until 1953.

He married Mary Steiner in April of 1954, and they moved to Topeka, where he attended business college and earned a degree in accounting and management. He started his career with Nemaha Coop Creamery in Sabetha, and later transferred to Springfield, Mo., where he worked in the home office of Mid-America Dairymen until he retired. After retiring in 1989, they moved to Overland Park, where he worked for several years for the church mission committee, traveling to European countries and India. They returned to Sabetha in 2016.

Eugene became a member of the Apostolic Christian Church at the age of 26 and served as a minister and elder of various Apostolic Christian Churches. In later years, he was a member of the Apostolic Christian Faith Church.

He was a much loved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Lucy Rokey, Lorene Strahm, Frances Zaugg, Evelyn Benninger Steiner and Mamie Strahm.

Eugene is survived by his wife Mary of 64 years; son, Darin (Jo) Marti of Manhattan; daughters, Kara (Greg) Snyder of Stilwell, Jamie Marti of Overland Park, and Trela (Chuck) Wirtz of Whittemore, Iowa; grandchildren, Quinton (Heather) Snyder and Kenton (Heidi) Snyder, all of Quincy, Ill., Lora (Matt) Pfeifer and Stacy Marti of Manhattan, Garrett (Kathryn) Wirtz of Algona, Iowa, Tyson (Autumn) Wirtz of West Bend, Iowa, and Carson Wirtz of Whittemore, Iowa; and great-grandchildren Declan Pfeifer, Emma, Allana, Zach, Ridge, Slate and Tripp Snyder, and Beckett, Emerson and Espyn Wirtz.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Apostolic Christian Faith Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha. Interment will be made in the Apostolic Christian Faith Church Cemetery.
