Betty L. Foster, age 86, of Lamar, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 surrounded by her family at Truman Healthcare Center.
Betty was born October 31, 1927 at Healdton, Oklahoma, next to youngest of the seven children of Thomas & Lottie (Davis) Thompson. After graduating from high school in Brownstown, Illinois, Betty worked for several years as a secretary at the Pentagon. It was in Washington D.C. that she met Howard Foster, a young marine who was hospitalized after a serious accident which left him disabled. Howard and Betty were married May 1, 1954 and they dedicated more than 40 years to ministry. As the wife of a gospel preacher, Betty will be remembered as a tireless worker for the Lord as they served churches of Christ in Cumberland and Baltimore, Maryland, and in Bona, Lamar, Centerpoint, and Stockton, Missouri. After retiring in 1986, they made their home in Lamar.
Betty and Howard had celebrated 54 years together before his death January 1, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Calvin & Clifford Thompson; and three sisters, Aline Thompson, Fleeta Mattes, and Melba Tomlin.
Survivors include a son, Russell (Teresa) Foster, Kansas City, Missouri; a daughter, Karen (Jim) Gilmartin, Lamar; a sister, Duritha Eaton, Spring Arbor, Michigan; six grandchildren, Jared (Kelly) Foster, Sara Foster, April (Tim) Brown, Austin, Dylan, and Krista Gilmartin; and a great-grandson, Owen Foster.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 22nd at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Fair Haven Children’s Home in care of the funeral home.
