Ernie Thomas

Ernest “Ernie” L. Thomas, 92, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.

 He was born on December 3, 1921 to Lee and Eva (Babock) Thomas in Carthage, Missouri. Ernie was a lifetime resident of Carthage. He worked for 35 years at Big Smith Cutting Room before retiring in 1987, and also worked for 6 years at Mark Twain School. Ernie served in the US Marines during World War II. He serviced as an officer at the V.F.W. Post #2590, Carthage and was a Life-time member of the Joplin Eagles Club. Ernie graduated from Carthage High School in 1941. Ernie married Gloria M. James on March 26, 1964 in Carthage, Missouri.

 Survivors include his wife Gloria, one daughter Cammy Barton and husband Shane of Carthage, two granddaughters Morgan and Madison Barton, and one great-grandson Zach Pratt. Ernie was preceded by his parents and two sisters.

 Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the American Lung Cancer Association care of Ulmer Funeral Home. The arrangements are under the direction of the Ulmer Funeral Home.
