Wayne Bertrand Johnson, age 56 of Joplin, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born June 1, 1957 in Long Island, NY, he was the son of the late Milton Johnson and Auden Gjersvick Johnson and moved with the family to Joplin in 1962. Wayne was a 1975 graduate of Parkwood High School and attended MSSU, receiving his Realtor’s License. Since 2005 he worked with Pro 100 Realtors. Previously he had worked for Griffith Motors in Neosho, the former Steve Spicer dealership in Joplin and Blackcat Body Shop. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served as Past Exalted Ruler of Joplin Elk’s Lodge No. 501 and as Vice President of Joplin Board of Realtors. He also volunteered for several community organizations.
On September 7, 1985 he married Jan S. Williams in Joplin. She survives.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Katy Johnson of Columbia, MO; a brother, Kent Johnson of Overland Park, KS; nieces and nephews, Travis Johnson and wife Stacey, Tedra Korf and husband Bryan, Kristopher Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Ben VanDeVeer and wife Terra, Rebekah VanDeVeer, Angelica Villanueva and husband Anthony, Jonathan Williams; several great-nieces and great-nephews; mother-in-law, Patty Galbraith of Joplin; father-in-law, Pat Williams and wife Lee of Sand Spring, OK; sisters-in-law, Sharon Johnson of Jenks, OK, Connie Williams of Pea Ridge, AR, Tanya Reid of San Diego, CA; brothers-in-law, Michael Williams and wife Michelle of Rogers, AR, Todd Williams and wife Kim of Sand Spring, OK; and his beloved Bassett Hound, Bud.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bernie Johnson. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions are encouraged to Joplin Humane Society.
