George W. ‘G.W.’ Smith, age 82, Joplin, passed away at 9:53 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2014 at Seneca House after an illness.
George was born August 17, 1931 in Farwell, Texas to the late George W. Smith and Alta McEntosh Smith.
George married Esther Mae Kahoe on September 5, 1957 in Amarillo, Texas. They moved to the McDonald County area to adopt their daughter, Vickie in 1965. They then moved to the Joplin area in 1967 and adopted their son, Dwaine. He often operated service stations in the Joplin area for several years. He was a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church and also attended Life Church, Carthage, with his daughter, due to his health. George was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War from 1952-1954.
Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Cupp; son-in-law, James Cupp, both of Joplin; one son, Dwaine Smith, Joplin; one sister, Betty Gardner, Pineville; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Esther on September 25, 2011; and a brother, Bob Smith, in 1974.
Services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Cupp, Dwaine Smith, Johnnie Schofield, Zachary Sharon, Chandler Davis, Landon Sharon, Dwaine Smith and Chris Copeland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
