(From Parker Mortuary)Michael R. Messner, age 68, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.
Mr. Messner was born on March 19, 1952 to Jack and Theba (Turnbull) Messner, in Joplin, MO. He grew up and attended Joplin Catholic Schools graduating from McAuley High School in 1970. After graduation,
Michael enlisted in the United States Air Force being stationed in Korea for three years of his ten-year service. After honorably serving, he returned to Joplin and started his career in Auto Body Repair. He retired from Covey & Poe Auto Body after 20 years of employment.
On September 1, 1984 he was united in marriage to Janet Johnson in Joplin, she survives. Michael enjoyed the time spent with family and being “Poppy”. When he wasn’t tinkering in his shop, Michael liked to watch NASCAR and was an avid reader of history and politics. He also enjoyed fishing and was considered by many to be a “Jack of all trades”.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Messner, of Joplin; his parents, Jack and Theba Messner, of Joplin; children, Misha Johnson, of Joplin, Michael Messner, of Jackson, MI, and Shannon Hale, and her husband, Craig, of Columbus, KS; siblings, Margaret Campbell, and her husband, Ron, of Joplin, Tim Messner, of Oronogo, Frank Messner, and his wife, Shonna, of Carl Junction, Susan Smith, and her husband, Gregg, of Joplin, and Karen Perry, and her husband, Don, of Tennessee; five grandchildren, Ashlyn Griffberg, of Joplin, Mc’Kayla Schaffer, of Jackson, MI, Nicholas VanEpps of Jackson, MI, Adrianna VanEpps of Jackson, MI, and Brady Hale, of Columbus, KS; great-grandchildren, Gabriel Sanders, Michael Springborn Jr., Charlotte Walker, and bonus great-grandchild, Aiden Walker; and several nieces and nephews as well as his favorite doggy girl, Sophie.

Michael was preceded in death by two siblings, Mary Messner and Tom Messner.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Saturday, March 13, 2021 starting at 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at Parker Mortuary in Joplin.
