Dixie Thompson

Dixie Lee Thompson, 79, Ft. Scott, KS, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022 at Freeman Health Systems in Joplin. Dixie was born December 28, 1942 in Walnut Shade, MO to Edward F. and Le Ona (Keithley) McGrath. 

She was united in marriage to Maynard Emery Thompson on April 19, 1959 in the Milo Baptist Church and he preceded her in death in 2008.

Dixie grew up in the Milo area attended Nevada High School. She worked as an aide at the Nevada State Hospital for several years, and for a time she and Maynard operated the Bowling Alley in Girard, KS. 








After receiving her Associate of Arts Degree in Nursing from Ft. Scott Community College, Dixie worked at Mt. Carmel Hospital for a number of years, the State Hospital in Osawatomie, KS, and retired from the VA Hospital in Leavenworth. She currently lived in Ft. Scott to be near her sister-in-law, Ronda Bailey. Dixie was a member of the Milo Baptist Church. She had a love for dogs and especially loved roses of all kinds.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Rachelle Connolly (John), Wichita, KS, Chad Thompson (Stacy), Pittsburg, KS, Shannon Thompson, Independence, MO, Shawn Thompson (Courtney), Independence, MO; step-son, Matthew Tilley (Megan), Oklahoma City, great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Thompson, Zailey Thompson, Ezriah Thompson, Vivenne Thompson, Tristan Thompson, Brooklyn Tilley; sister, Rhonda McGrath, Carthage, MO; sister-in-law, Ronda Bailey (Roger), Ft. Scott,; stepsister-in-law Wanda Haley, Ft Scott; two step brothers-in law, Wiley (Sharon) Wyckoff, Nevada and Weldon (Diane) Wyckoff, Louisville Ky; two nieces, Deidra May, St. Joseph, MO, and Taylor Bailey, Ft. Scott and her longtime companion, Mike Bowers of Ft. Scott, KS.

In addition to her husband, Maynard, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Rocky Thompson; and her brother, Frank McGrath.








Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022 at Milo Cemetery in Milo, MO.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to S.E.K. Humane Society c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO.
