Tom Courtney

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Charles Thomas Courtney, veteran teacher and long-time resident of Joplin, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 13th, following a sudden illness; he was 70 years old. He was born on November 15th, 1951, to Charles and Joan (Bean) Courtney of Lamar, Missouri.

Tom was a devoted, well-loved educator who taught at Joplin’s South Middle School until his retirement in 2011. His love of the outdoors was clear to see in his frequent camping and fishing trips with family and friends; he especially loved the ocean and had recently renewed focus on painting and photography.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, James and Robert Courtney. He is survived by one son - Jeremie Thomas Courtney of Olathe, Kansas - and one brother - Larry Courtney of Joplin. Tom will be greatly missed by his three grandchildren - Avery James, Samuel Thomas, & Jocelyn Lea Courtney - and the many members of his loving extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Friday, August 19, 2022, with Rev. Larry Courtney officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory of Joplin, Missouri.
