Shirley King

Shirley Lavon King, age 82, of Carthage, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.

Shirley, daughter of the late John and Wilma (Thomas) Hurtt, was born on November 12, 1939 in Joplin. She was a lifelong area resident and homemaker. On October 9, 1970 she was united in marriage to Kenneth King, he survives.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was active in her grandchildren’s lives, always attending and being present for all activities she could. Spending time with her family was her greatest joy.








Survivors include her husband, Kenneth King, Carthage; her children, Tammy Phillips, and her husband, Joe, of Joplin, James Hill Jr., of Joplin, Kenny King, and his wife, Mindy, of Joplin, and Beverly Carpenter, and her husband, James, of Carthage; grandchildren, Misty Southard, Tiffany Miller, J.J. Phillips, Starlett Hill, Payton Carpenter, Colton Carpenter, and Kobi Carpenter; siblings, Russell Hurtt, of Joplin, and Mary Ann Wiley, of Harrington, KS; 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Barney Hurtt, Kenneth Hurtt, and Beverly Johnson.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Parker Mortuary in Joplin with burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park in Joplin.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
