Wayne Mosby

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Wayne Morris Mosby, 82, of Neosho, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 06, 2023.

Wayne was born on October 7, 1940, to Albert and Addaline (Lewis) Mosby in Anderson, Missouri. He was a 1958 graduate of Anderson High School and entered the Navy soon after, serving eight years before joining the Air Force in January 1967. He was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, and served for 22 years before retiring honorably as a Senior Master Sergeant in January 1989.

Knowing Wayne also meant knowing how extremely funny and witty he was. If you were around him for any length of time, you were going to be laughing, and he’d make himself laugh in the process as well – and oh, how infectious his laughter was. His sense of humor was bar none, and he held onto that character trait to the very end.

The only trait equal to his humor was his intelligence. There wasn’t a crossword puzzle he couldn’t solve or many Jeopardy questions he didn’t know the answer to. Wayne was always curious and loved learning about anything and everything, and the way he could absorb knowledge was something to behold.

Over the years, he wore many hats as he raised his children – baseball coach, PTA President, even unannounced swing dance performer at a school concert (much to the embarrassment of his kids, of course!) When it came to his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, he was the official first sink bath giver, dedicated snack cake provider, school pick-up line hero at just about every school in the district, and cheerleader in the stands as long as he was able.

Ever the typical American Veteran, Wayne quietly devoted his time over the years to many worthy causes such as Meals on Wheels and delivering monthly groceries to the homebound through The Help Center, many times to people younger than himself. While he never wanted any recognition or fanfare, the family is extremely proud of not only his service to his Country but also to his community.

Wayne was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Neosho. His relationship with the Lord sustained him through many physical battles over the years, knowing God would carry him through. His faith and positive attitude never wavered through it all, and his life was a testimony of the goodness of the Lord.

Wayne met Cathy (Holloway) Mosby, the love of his life, and they were united in marriage on April 11, 1990, and she survives. Their story is the true embodiment of “in sickness and in health, for better or worse,” and she was a devoted wife, friend, partner, and caretaker for 34 years. Additional survivors include two sons: Bobby (Debbie) Mosby of Derby, Kansas, and Matthew (Autumn) Mosby of Neosho, Missouri; three daughters: Pam (Greg) Chewning of Wichita, Kansas; Kyle Anne Marble of Neosho, Missouri; and Julia (Kris) Rechkemmer of Oelwein, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law James Dale (Theresa) Holloway of Granby, Missouri; special family members Jeff and Kasey Wiley of Neosho, Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members locally and in Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather Glendon Hadley, son David Mosby; infant son Gilbert Lee Mosby; brother Malcolm Mosby and sister-in-law Edith Mosby; and sister Myrna Marble and brother-in-law Don Marble.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Neosho Freeman Hospital and Gentiva Hospice for their wonderful support, knowledge, compassion, and encouragement to us as a whole in the last few weeks.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Service will follow immediately after at 11:00 AM, with Pastor David Moore officiating. Contributions made in Wayne’s memory can be made to Gospel Lighthouse Church, 500 Rocketdyne Rd Neosho, MO 64850, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Plaza, Memphis, TN 38105.
