(From Clark Funeral Home)Marcia Jane (Mitts) Cope, 88, died Tuesday, November 14, 2023, after a long illness. She was born to Charles and Virginia Mitts in Neosho on March 9, 1935.
Marcia and her family lived in Powell until she was 11 and then moved back to rural Neosho for the rest of her school years. She graduated from Neosho High School in 1953.
Don Cope and Marcia were married in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 4, 1955. They lived much of their life in Neosho but spent time in Abilene, Texas, Bisbee, Arizona, and Wheaton. They were lifetime members of the Church of Christ in various congregations.
Marcia was a ‘worker bee’ and was known for her promptness, thoroughness, and ability to work with the public. She enjoyed her work as a dispatcher for the Newton County Sheriff’s Department. She retired from a job as Chief Deputy Collector for Newton County, where she was known for her ability to balance out the yearly collections for the county almost to the penny.
Marcia and Don enjoyed their vacations, especially in Colorado and along the Gulf shore in Florida. Going to Branson was also high on their list and a trip there always included attending a Brumley show, as she had grown up with their family.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sandy Black and husband, Brent of Wolverine Lake, Michigan and Pam Cope of Neosho; five grandchildren, Tyrel Wilson, Arin Patrick, Charley Black, Kaci Jones and Jordan Black; seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Barbie Cope Lindley of Lockwood, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Anne Cope and Lia Cope of Neosho, Missouri and brother-in-law, Glenn Cope and wife, Barbara of Tonkawa, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, son, Jeffrey, grandson, Travis, brother Clyde and her parents.
