Harpo Clapper

(From Knell Mortuary)

William Keith “Harpo” Clapper, 79, Carthage, Missouri, passed away early Monday morning, August 12, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, Missouri. He was born August 16, 1944, in Wentworth, Missouri, the son of the late William H. Clapper and Ruth (Berrier) Clapper. He married Sally Farmer in 1966 in Sarcoxie, Missouri.

William, known as “Harpo” to his friends and family, was renowned for his love of classic Chevy cars. He spent countless hours working on these magnificent machines, a hobby that was more than just a pastime—it was a way of connecting with fellow enthusiasts and preserving a slice of Americana. His presence was a staple at car swap meets, where he shared stories and traded parts with a smile that was as genuine as it was infectious. His love for NASCAR was unparalleled. He was a die-hard fan of racing legends Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Chase Elliott. He took great joy in collecting memorabilia and cheering on his favorites during every race.

Beyond his hobbies, Harpo had a long tenure of employment at Schreiber Foods in Carthage before transferring to the Monett location where he was a skilled industrial maintenance man and welder. His work was an art form that he honed with pride and excellence.

Perhaps one of Harpo's most endearing qualities was his sense of humor. He was a natural jokester, always ready with a quip or a playful noise, doing anything he could to coax a laugh or a smile from those around him. Harpo’s four-legged companion, Brisco, was more than just a pet; he was a loyal friend and confidant. The two were inseparable, sharing snacks and adventures, with Brisco often seen following closely in Harpo's shadow.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 58 years, Sally Clapper; his daughters, Paula Brooks (Scott) and Tammy Penrow (Michael); his granddaughters, Heather Dabney (Jared), and Breanna Brooks; his great-grandchildren, Skaia Brooks, Drew Dabney, and Jonah Dabney; his sisters, Nadine Mazur, Phyllis Clapper, Joyce Starchman, Nancy Blinzler, and Susan Foster; his brother, Jerry Clapper; and many extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Alice Watson.

Memorial graveside services will be held 10 am, Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Fullerton Cemetery, Carthage. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage.
