Helen Moss

(From Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Helen Louise Moss, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on May 19, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, Helen was the cherished daughter of Robert B. and Miriam S. Morrow.

Helen met her husband, Tom P. Moss, while attending nursing school at Washington University. They were married on March 27, 1949, in Lockwood, Missouri, embarking on a journey of love, faith, and service that lasted until Tom’s passing.

Together, Tom and Helen began their careers in Carthage, Missouri, working for Ulmer Funeral Home. They later purchased and operated Moss Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, Missouri, until 1974 when they moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas, to purchase Baxter Vault Company. The couple retired in 1999 and relocated to Joplin, Missouri, where Helen continued her life of service and dedication to her community and family.

Helen was known for her generous spirit and active volunteerism. A talented pianist, she often played for church services and funerals. Her many passions included P.E.O., golfing, gardening, volunteering at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, and serving on the altar guild at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where her faith was a cornerstone of her life.

Helen’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom P. Moss; her parents, Robert and Miriam Morrow; and her sister, Barbara Braznell. She is survived by her two brothers, Robert Morrow (Kay) of Frederick, MD, and Charlie Morrow (Lois) of Evergreen, CO; her five children: Mary B. Moss of Cairo, Egypt, Margaret Wampler (John) of Carthage, MO, George Moss (Betty) of Baxter Springs, KS, Robert Moss of Wildwood, MO, and Beth Cunningham (Craig) of Lone Jack, MO. Helen also leaves behind nine grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends who will miss her deeply.

Services for Helen will include a visitation on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, Missouri, followed by a graveside service at Sarcoxie Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Pastor Chris Ramstad of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Joplin, Missouri.

Pallbearers for the service are Helen’s grandsons: Alexander Moss, David Pyle, Christopher Moss, Michael Moss, Dan Brandt, and Dan Schlemper.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Altar Guild, 2616 Connecticut Avenue, Joplin, MO 64804.

Helen Louise Moss lived a life filled with love, faith, and generosity. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
