Thersa Kavanagh

Thersa M. Kavanagh 55, of Joplin, MO died Thursday December 24, 2020 following complications from a chronic illness.

Thersa was born December 30, 1964 in Ottawa, KS the daughter of Lawrence and Noma (Eppright)
Darrow. She lived in Pittsburg most all her life and was a graduate of Pittsburg High School. She had
recently moved to Joplin to be closer to her grandchildren. 

Thersa worked as photo retoucher for Miller’s Professional Imaging for about 10 years but her most cherished job was raising her children.







Thersa was of the Christian Faith and was known as a loving mom and NeNe.

Survivors include her parents of Webb City, MO; daughter Molly Tarwater and husband Trent of Carl Junction, MO; son Trent Kavanagh of Joplin, MO; siblings Penny Howard and husband Mike of Carl Junction, MO, Lawrence Darrow and wife Lori of Springfield, MO and Kirk Darrow and wife Stacey of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren Kaizer, Harper and Kreed Tarwater and numerous nieces and nephews.


Private Graveside Services will be Monday January 4, 2021 at the Weaver Cemetery in Purcell, MO with Pastor Duane Elmore officiating. 

In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Ronald McDonald House of the Four States. Friends may drop off or mail memorials to the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, KS 66762. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.

Gerald Johnson

Gerald R. Johnson, 74, of Mound Valley, passed away at 7:09 a.m., Saturday, December 26, 2020, at Stormont Vale Hospital in Topeka.

Gerald Ray Johnson was born on March 18, 1946, to Charles Cleo and Louise (Cunningham) Johnson in Parsons. As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in Mound Valley. In 1964, Gerald graduated from Labette County Community High School and then attended Coffeyville Community College.

He worked at the Lawrence CO-OP before returning to Mound Valley in 1969, where he had resided since. Gerald worked for the Mound Valley CO-OP for 34 years and also farmed and raised cattle.








A faithful Christian, Gerald was a founding member of the Mound Valley Lighthouse Church. He had also served on the Mound Valley city council. In earlier years, he was a first responder and a volunteer for the Mound Valley fire department.

Gerald’s greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family and spending time at church was a close second.

On February 5, 1973, Gerald and Dorothy Weeks were united in marriage. She preceded him in death. On July 10, 2006, Gerald and Gloria Kiah were united in marriage. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and one son, Tony Robb.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 2, 2020, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow at Mound Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The funeral service can be viewed live on the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home Facebook page. For all events, social distancing guidelines will be followed, including the requirement of face masks.

Sam Walker

Samuel Lee Walker, age 82, of Lamar, Missouri passed away December 26, 2020, at his home after a short illness. 
 
Sam was born December 9, 1938 in Golden City, MO to Wilfred Walker and Anna Pearl (Ukena) Walker. Sam graduated from Golden City High School in the class of 1955. 

On June 6, 1958, Sam married Norma Jean Sheat in Lamar, MO.

Sam was a retired truck driver but worked most of his life as a farmer. His passions were family and farming. He enjoyed reading, gardening, puzzles, cards, dominoes, fishing and spending time with family and friends.








Survivors include his wife, one son; Mark (Rhonda) Walker of Fort Scott, Kansas, three daughters; Debra (Royce) Anderson, Jerico Springs, MO, Sondra Jackson, Humansville, MO, Sherry Gastel (Cooper Cox) of Lamar, one brother; James Walker, Dudenville, MO, three sisters; Pearl (Leroy) Graham, Shawnee Mission, KS, Linda (Ronnie) Means, Lamar, Barbara (Bob) Evans, of Jasper, MO, eight grandchildren; Jeanne, Jacob, Ginger, Dustin, Heather, Alisha, Diahn, and Zac, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Preceding Samuel in death were his parents.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

James Foust

James Edward Foust, age 93, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 7:34 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2020, at Cox Hospital, in Monett, Missouri. He was born December 25, 1926, in Stotts City, Missouri, the son of Edward and Nora (Enke) Foust.

James was a United States Army Veteran serving during World War II and was a truck driver for KAW Trucking Company. He enjoyed fishing, playing music and was a member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

On June 7, 2016, he married Barbara Clevenger in Mt. Vernon.








James is survived by his wife, Barbara; one daughter, Debra Ryan and her husband, Bubba, of Bellevue, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Shawna, Lisa, Brandon, Shane, Jason, Nicholas, Jennifer, Codi, Donovan and Kasie; several great and great-great grandchildren and one sister, Magrette Baugh and her husband, Homer, of Carthage, Missouri.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Nora, his first wife of 65 years, Elsie Mae Foust, one son, Larry Edward Foust, one daughter, Barbara Jean Foust, one brother, Marvin and one sister, Helen.

Gladys Filarski

Mrs. Gladys Rose Filarski, 91, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, passed away Friday, December 25, 2020 at the Sarcoxie Nursing Center.

Gladys entered this life on November 2, 1929 in rural Sarcoxie, Missouri, to the union of the late John and Florence (Knoetzel) Szydloski. She was a 1947 graduate of Diamond High School. 

On May 23, 1953 she was united in marriage to Frank Filarski at Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Together they shared sixty-four years until his passing on June 9, 2017. 








For twenty-two plus years she was employed with Juvenile Shoe in Sarcoxie, as well as selling Avon products for twelve years. She became a Catholic at a very young age. Gladys was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Sarcoxie. She enjoyed crafts, going to the lake and spending time with her family and friends. She will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and her siblings, John Szydloski, Wayne Szydloski, Helen Boursheski, Mildred Holland, Agnes Stroud and Pauline Raper.

Gladys is survived by several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Graveside funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Sarcoxie Cemetery with Father Matthew Rehrauer officiating. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Dave Lawyer, Mike Chandler, Terry White, Larry Velten, Shane Pennington and Stan Pennington. Carol House

Carol Ann House, age 73, of Lockwood, Missouri, passed away at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 18, 2020, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, after a long bout of illness. She was born May 17, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Harry Harold and Betty Joan (Lakatos) Steffen.

Carol will be remembered for her loving and caring nature, but also as a force to be reckoned with when it came to anyone messing with her family. She was foe to none and friend to many as she always made people around her feel welcome and loved. 








Carol and her family moved to Missouri at the end of 1986 and she spent the next 34 years living at her home in Lockwood, Missouri. She spent several years working as a cook at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Lockwood and then as a cook at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mt Vernon, Missouri. 

She was a jack of all trades as she was once a Catering Truck Driver, a Semi Truck Driver, a Taxidermist, Department Store Manager, Auction House Manager, School Bus Driver, among other various occupations. 

She was a strong woman with a heart of gold and the fighting spirit of a warrior. Carol had a strong faith in God who guided her throughout her life. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

On August 28, 1995, she married John Meridith House Jr., in Lockwood. He preceded her in death on November 26, 2020.

Carol was a hardworking woman who raised five children while working sometimes two and three jobs at a time but would help anyone who needed it. She had five biological children, Sherry Hull and husband, David, of Lockwood, Charles Delaney and wife, Brenda, of Stockton, Missouri, Jamie Delaney-Stevens and husband, Darrell, of Walnut, Iowa, and Renae Griffin and husband, Pat, of Omaha, Nebraska; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She had several youth and adults throughout the years who referred to her as “Mom” because of her loving personality and willingness to take anyone in who needed a family.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Betty, her husband, John, one daughter, Betty Parham and three brothers, Bobby, John and Ronnie Steffen.
