Michael E. Sturgis, Sr., age 65 of Joplin, Mo., passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 8, 2019.
Mike was born on May 29, 1954 in Joplin, the son of Donald and June (Frazier) Sturgis. He has been a lifetime area resident.
Mike was an educator for 46 years, most recently at Jasper High School. He had a passion for coaching. He coached many different sports throughout the years; primarily football and basketball. Mike really enjoyed being an assistant coach for the Joplin Crusaders. Additionally, he sold real estate with his wife at Charles Burt Realtors for many years. He was a member of the House of Prayer Church in Riverton, Ks.
Survivors include his wife; Janis McGrew of Joplin, a daughter; Julie Trahin and husband Rich of Raleigh, N.C., four sons; Jason McGrew and wife Sylvia of Webb City, Mo., John McGrew and wife Gina of Joplin, Mike Sturgis, Jr. and wife Merlinda of Joplin, Sam Sturgis and wife Leah of Joplin, nine grandchildren; Jade Trahin, Nashell McGrew, Tyler McGrew, Sydney Trahin, Angelica Sturgis, Sadie McGrew, Rebecca Sturgis, Noah McGrew and Rosalie Sturgis, and one great-grandson, Nolan Weaver.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and by a grandson, Jacoby Sturgis.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the House of Prayer Church in Riverton, Ks. Burial will follow at Gandy-Sturgis Cemetery in Riverton.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
