Helen-Louise Elliff

Helen-Louise Hough Elliff, Carthage, Missouri, passed away Sunday morning, March 27, 2022 at her home with family by her side. Helen-Louise was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, and moved to Carthage when she was three. Her parents were the late Helen-Mar (Halliburton) Hough and G. Everett Hough. Mr. Hough was President of Central National Bank, now UMB Bank, Carthage.

Mrs. Elliff attended Mark Twain Grade School and graduated from Carthage High School in 1947. She received an Associate Degree from Joplin Junior College, and a Bachelor of Journalism Degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1951.








She married Kenneth J. Elliff on August 19, 1951. While her husband served in the Army Intelligence Branch, she was employed by Montgomery Ward’s advertising department, Baltimore, and Needham, Louis and Brorby Advertising Agency, Chicago.

After his army service, Mr. Elliff entered law school at University of Missouri, Kansas City, and Mrs. Elliff worked for KCMO. After graduation, they moved to Joplin, then to Carthage where Mr. Elliff practiced law until his death in 1975 and she remained a homemaker.

Mrs. Elliff is survived by her son, Mark J. Elliff and his wife, Vicki; daughter, Lee Elliff Pound and her husband, Mike; daughter, Anne Elliff; grandchildren, Jennifer (Elliff) Nichols and husband Randy, and Emma Pound; two great-grandchildren, Shay and Brooke Gaddis. A grandson, Jonathan Elliff, died in 2005.

Mrs. Elliff was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority; Gamma Alpha Chi Journalism Fraternity; PEO, AP Chapter; charter member of Friends of Phelps House; McCune-Brooks Hospital Auxiliary; and First United Methodist Church where she had served on the administrative board and the board of Trustees. She was active in civic affairs and fund-raising drives and had been a former girl scout leader.

Graveside services will be held 11 am, Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Park Cemetery, Carthage. The family will receive friends from 5-7, Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Laurel B.
