Grady Thomas

Briant Jeffery "Grady" Thomas, age 57, Joplin, passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2017 at his home after a courageous four year battle with lung cancer.

Grady was born February 6, 1960 in Joplin, son of the late Francis Thomas and Karen Sue Burnett Thomas. He attended Joplin schools, and graduated from Memorial High School in 1979 where he was a member of the 1978 Missouri State Championship Basketball Team. Grady was an active member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church where he was an Associate Pastor, former youth leader, Sunday school teacher, and active on several committees. He also enjoyed his younger years playing keyboards for the band, Permanent Party.

Grady worked for the City of Joplin for over 30 years, retiring in 2016 working with the Parks Department.

In addition to his parents, Grady was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel D. Thomas who passed away in 1998.

Survivors include his significant other and primary care giver, Gwynn Stone of the home, siblings, twin brother, Jeffrey Thomas of Joplin, Glenda Thomas Whitaker of Belton, Missouri, Linda Thomas Terry of Kansas City, Missouri, Cheryl Thomas Fowler of Joplin, Douglas Thomas of Joplin; grandmother, Fannie Burnett of Joplin, aunt, Margaret Elaine Love of Joplin; step-siblings, James Thomas, Zaveon Thomas, Camilla Smith, Jackie Shannon, and Joy Shannon all of Joplin, Ray Marion of Harvey, Louisiana, Michelle Stewart of Joplin, Lisa Marion Hayward and husband Edward of Miami, Florida; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral service will be Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Pastors Bernard Johnson and Rufus Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in Parkway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Repass will follow at St. Paul United Methodist Church following the interment.
