Jimmy L. Carter of Loma Linda/Joplin, MO passed through heaven’s gates June 14, 2017, four days after his 88th birthday, at Freeman Hospital.
Jim, a Korean War Era Veteran, was born June 10, 1929, the son of Fay and Helen (Scott) Carter. He married his teenage sweetheart and best friend, Ruth Ann Jackson on August 20, 1950.
An accomplished chemical engineer with a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering management, Jim worked in the oil, fertilizer and explosive industries. He designed and was responsible for multiple patents related to controlling smoke stack emissions and held many senior level management positions.
Sailing was a passion. Jim was a founder of the Grand Lake Sailing Club and loved day sailing and racing. He and Ruth spent many vacations sailing yachts all over the world. Once they retired, they wore out three motor homes traveling throughout the US and Canada. An avid golfer, he had three “hole in ones”. After his first hole in one at Loma Linda, he purchased the lot 30 feet from the hole and built their house on it.
Jim was an active member of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church. He cherished his Sunday School group like a second family.
Most of all, Jim was a genuine, compassionate, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Survivors include wife Ruth; sister Christine (Everett) Bartley; sons Mitchel (Gale)Carter and Stan (Beth) Carter; grandchildren Heather (Shad) Lankford , Cory Carter, Timothee (Gilbert) Gonzalez; nephew Tim (Kimberly) Bartley and niece Rebecca (Chris) McCullison; great-grandchildren Gage, Drew, Chantel and Cole Lankford, Taylor and Jackson Carter, Gilbert and Marco Gonzalez.
Jim is welcomed to heaven by his brother Charlie Carter and grandson Christopher Carter.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chris Carter Charity for Life, a 501c3, tax-deductible charity dedicated to suicide prevention in our military. The charity address is 611 Roundstone Drive, Weldon Spring, MO 63304.
Visitation will be from 6 – 8 pm Friday, June 16 at Parker Mortuary, 1502 S Joplin Ave, Joplin. Funeral Services are 10 am Saturday, June 17 at Byers Avenue Methodist, 1730 Byers Ave, Joplin. Burial will follow at 1:00 pm, New Liberty Cemetery (Kings Prairie), State Hwy Z & Farm Rd 2020, Monett, MO 65708.
