Betty Shimp

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Betty Lou Shimp, Carthage, Missouri, passed from this life on August 3, 2022, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 93.

Betty was born November 27, 1928, in New Hampton, Missouri, the daughter of Charles Wesley and Mabel Marie (Schaub) McMichael. She graduated from Gower High School in Gower, Missouri, in 1946 as valedictorian of her class.

After high school, Betty furthered her education at Kansas City Secretarial School and became a stenographer. Her post-high school employment experiences included Haver-Glover Laboratory, Roland Photo Studio, May Flower Sales Company, and Corn Products Refining Company.

On June 5, 1954, at the Grayson Community Church in Grayson, Missouri, Betty and Dr. Frank Harel Shimp were united in marriage. After a honeymoon to St. Paul, Minnesota, Betty continued to work for Corn Products Refining Company until 1956, when a job transfer took Frank and Betty away from the Kansas City area.

Betty was a faithful wife and accompanied her husband as his job relocated them over the years to various locations, including Smithfield, Virginia, Cheektowaga (Buffalo), New York, Cincinnati, Ohio, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Raytown (Kansas City), Missouri, and Joplin, Missouri.

While in Virginia, Betty continued to further her education by attending the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg in the Fall of 1956. She was an alumna of the class of 1960. Betty enjoyed taking care of her home and her family. She and Frank shared 42 years of marriage before his passing on May 24, 1997.

After her husband’s passing, Betty continued to reside in Southwest Missouri – in Joplin at first, and then she later moved to Carthage. She resided at Maple Tree Terrace Assisted Living in Carthage for nearly 18 years and then had a short stay of about eight weeks at St. Luke’s Nursing Center in Carthage.

In recent years, Betty attended the Diamond Wesleyan Holiness Alliance Church.
