Shirley Mitchell

Shirley Mitchell, 75, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at the National Health Care Center in Joplin, Missouri. 

Shirley was born on March 21, 1948, in Springfield, Missouri, to Thomas Herzog and Verda (Mason) Herzog. She was very involved with her church, Risen Ranch Church in Carthage. She worked as a guide for George Washington Carver National Park, and she really enjoyed playing around with different recipes, making photo albums, and traveling to different rodeos to see her son, Mike, in action. 








Shirley served others her whole life. She worked as a customer service representative for Wal-Mart, a waitress, and then housekeeping at Mercy McCune Brooks Hospital in Carthage.

Shirley was united in marriage to Bernie Dale Mitchell; he preceded her in death on January 9, 2020.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Jefferies (Beverly) of Carthage, and Mark Jefferies (Jennifer) of Bolivar; two stepsons, Rodney Mitchell (Becky) of West Plains, and Todd Mitchell Rogersville, Missouri; one sister Barbara Lennox (Harrold) of Fairgrove; 11 grandchildren, Rachel Caddell (Tom) of Buffalo, Alissa Garrison (John) of Buffalo, Chad Grahm of Florida, Chelsea Kirkpatrick (Kyle) of Ozark, Rayna Jefferies of Carthage, Cheyenne Lafalier (Dalton) of Bartlett, Kansas, and Kolton Anderson (Taylor) of Springfield; Quinten Mitchell of Boliver, Beth Mitchell of West Plains, Todd Mitchell of Rogersville, Shelby Mitchell of Rogersville; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.








Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernie Mitchell; and one granddaughter, Shanae Jefferies (December 27, 2022).

A graveside service will be held for Shirley at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Fisher Cemetery in Preston, Missouri. The visitation will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 7, 2023.
