Joe Johnson

Joseph Paul Johnson, Sr., age 60 of Joplin, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Mercy of Joplin.

“Big Head Joe” (as he was known by his friends) was born October 31, 1962 in Joplin, son of the late Raymond Barker, Sr. and Katie Mae Johnson.






 

He grew up in Joplin and graduated from Memorial High School before working as an independent plumber for many years, and also as a mason working in construction. He was a very outgoing individual who never met a stranger. He was a friend to many, and was always available to lend a hand or give some valuable advice. He was also a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his stepfather, Atchielee Derrick; a son, Justin Kress; brothers, William “Blue” Johnson, Raymond Barker, Jr., Gary “Chanel” Johnson, and Stephen Blunt; sisters, Mary Lee Johnson, Marilyn Johnson, Donna Washington, Billie Ann Johnson, and Maria Ledger.







Survivors include his children, Jarvis Fields of Oklahoma City, OK, Tristan Fields of Tulsa, OK, Ashton Barber, Indica Johnson Smith both of Joplin, Christopher Robertson of Kansas City, MO, Joseph P. Johnson, Jr. of Springfield, MO, Kaden Glaser, Noah Glaser both of Carthage, MO, Christal Kress and Cara Kress both of Joplin; 17 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy Britt of Washington, MO; brothers, Gilbert Johnson of Seattle, WA, and Charles Johnson of Denver, CO; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins including his favorite niece, Muriel.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
