(From Parker Mortuary)Larry Gene Thompson, age 76 of Joplin; a man known for his courage, handiness, and sense of humor, passed away on November 9, 2023, in Joplin, Missouri, following a brave battle with cancer.
Born on February 13, 1947, in Sharon Grove, Kentucky to the late Carl and Katherine (Boarders) Thompson, Larry was a beacon of strength and resilience, leaving a lasting legacy for all who knew him.
Larry was a devoted family man, who took great joy in spending time with his loved ones. He was the proud father of three daughters, Angela Wagner of Joplin, Connie Moss (Alan) of Galletin, TN, and Kandi Griffith (Marvin) of Carthage.

Larry was also a doting grandfather to Brandon Griffith (Destiny), William Garrett (Ashley), Lindsey Warner, Shandy Hoeffner (Ryan), Savannah Moore, and Kiara Smothers; and six great-grandchildren. His love for his family was evident in his unwavering support and the pride he took in their accomplishments.
In addition to his immediate family, Larry is survived by his brother, Norris Thompson of Texas, and his sister, Wylene Neisz of Kentucky. The bond Larry shared with his siblings was a testament to his strong sense of family and his caring nature.
Larry spent 35 years as an over-the-road truck driver, a career that showcased his tenacity and dedication. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was respected by his peers for his reliability and commitment to his profession. Larry's experiences on the road enriched his life, providing him with countless stories that he loved to share with others.
Aside from his work, Larry had a deep love for his family and his grandchildren. He cherished the time he spent with them, and these moments were the highlights of his life. Larry's love for his family was evident in every interaction, and his dedication to them was unwavering. His family will remember him as a pillar of strength, always there to lend a helping hand or share a joke to lighten the mood.
Other than his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Pierce Thompson, passing in April of 2022; two brothers and one sister.
A Celebration of Life will be held on December 1, 2023 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm at Celebration Church’s Kid’s Building in Duquesne, Missouri. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
