Joanne Garrett

(From Parker Mortuary)

Joanne Josephine Garrett, 87 of Joplin, Mo., passed away on April 17, 2026. She was born on November 2, 1938, in Baxter Springs, Ks. to the late Marvin and Josephine (Savute) Sills.

Joanne was a woman who found meaning in caring for others, and she carried that spirit into every part of her life. She was known for her steady presence, her kind heart, and the comfort she brought to those around her. Whether she was at work, at home, or spending time with loved ones, she had a way of making people feel welcome and valued. Her life reflected the simple but powerful virtues of hard work, loyalty, and love for family and friends.

A dedicated cook, Joanne was happiest in a kitchen; serving many years with the Joplin School District. She also worked at The Elks Lodge. She was proud of her Italian heritage and enjoyed sharing her recipes with her family. Although, most were from her memory; a little of this, a pinch of that. The first and most ingredient was love.

Joanne was an avid Elvis fan and loved introducing her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids to his music and movies. She found pleasure in crocheting afghans for her family, creating handmade pieces that showed both her skill and love. She enjoyed crosswords, reading and collecting Elvis memorabilia.

She will be missed greatly by her children, Keni Jo Garrett and Kim Ann Garrett; grandchildren, Zak Thornton, Heather Welch, and Chris Dunning (Laurie); great- grandchildren, Abbi Caldwell, Chloe Caldwell, Gabe Caldwell, Lyric Meyer, Luke Dunning, Drew Dunning, and Claire Dunning; siblings, Carol Johnson, Marvin Sills (Linda), Frank Sills (Loretta), and Linda Meredith; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Pete Welch; sister, Sandy Smith; brother, Tommy Sills; daughter-in-law, Penni Welch; and brothers-in-law, Butch Haymaker, Earl Johnson, and Jim Taylor.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:pm at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. In lieu of flowers (She thought they were a waste of money), memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.

Arrangements are under the direct care of Parker Mortuary in Joplin, MO.
