Mrs. Marta Louise Petty, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on April 22, 2026.
Marta was born on September 1, 1953, in Joplin, Missouri, to Hazel and Martin Hoagland at the former Freeman Hospital on 20th Street. She was raised on Annie Baxter Avenue, where she spent her entire life, deeply rooted in the community she loved.
On a joyful day in 1973, she married the love of her life, Stanley Gene Petty, at Empire Baptist Church. Together, they built a beautiful life and welcomed twins, Stephanie and Levi, in March of 1977.
Marta was a devoted caregiver and proud business owner of Petty’s Pitter Patter Daycare, which she operated for many years. She had a natural gift for nurturing children and found immense joy in helping them grow. She also gave a unique nickname for all her kids and people she knew in her life. Her dedication and impact were recognized by the City of Joplin, honoring her business for 25 years of outstanding service. After closing her daycare, Marta continued her passion for caring for others by working with Joplin Schools as a bus aide for students with special needs. She served in this role for 15 years before retiring in 2021.
Marta cherished time spent with her family, especially playing cards and dominoes together. She also had a special love for decorating and celebrating every holiday, with Christmas holding a particularly dear place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Hazel Hoagland, and her brothers, Rick and Dennis Hoagland.
Marta is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, Stanley Petty; her brothers, Kenny and Terry Hoagland; her daughter, Stephanie Harrison and her husband, Younger; her son, Levi Petty and his wife, Betty; and her three beloved grandchildren, Austin Rainwater, Garrett Harrison, and Joseph Teague.
A memorial service celebrating Marta’s beautiful life will be held on Monday, May 4, at 6:00 p.m. at The Main Event, 611 Main Street, Joplin, Missouri.
