Pete Myers

Merlin Wayne “Pete” Myers, 96, of Parsons, died at 1:14 P.M., Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the Parsons Good Samaritan Center.

He was born April 8, 1923 in Rural Labette County, Kansas, a son of Austin Whitson and Della Florence (Spunaugle) Myers. He grew up there and attended rural schools. He then served in the United States Army and upon being discharged was employed at the Katy Railroad until the Parsons shops were closed in 1957. He then worked at Cold Storage and later worked construction for various companies, including LaForge and Budd Construction. He also worked at Princess Homes. After he retired he worked part-time at Faith United Methodist Church and was the church custodian.

On May 1, 1943 he was united in marriage to Agnes Hazlett at Parsons. They later divorced. He later married Barbara Helen Whitson on October 2, 1964 at Parsons. She preceded him in death on January 27, 2006.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Kansas International Local No. 1280. He enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and working on small engines and cars. He was able to fix anything that was broken. He and his wife were members of a C.B. club and he operated a bait shop out of his house. In addition to raising his twins he was involved in raising his other children and babysat grandchildren.








Survivors include: one son – Steven Johnston, Parsons, KS; three daughters – Marcia Gale Murphy, Parsons, KS, Barbara Diane Johnston, and her husband, Donnie, Sarcoxie, MO, Linda McReynolds, and her husband, Patrick, Parsons, KS; sixteen grandchildren – Julie Dietsche, Parsons, KS, Charlene Bode, Parsons, KS, Barbara McCoy, Broken Arrow, OK, William Brian Collins, Lawrence, KS, Daniel McReynolds, Olathe, KS, Patricia McReynolds- Condon, Broken Arrow, OK, Lipinschy, Ardmore, OK, Charissa Williams, Joplin, MO, Alicia Marshall, Joplin, MO, Jonathan Gaines, Joplin, MO, Jake Johnston, Parsons, KS, Matthew Johnston, Carterville, MO, David Paulson, Wichita, KS, Audrey Paulson, Parsons, KS, James Paulson, Parsons, KS, Kayla Wilson, Parsons, KS;

He was preceded in death by four brothers – Alfred, Vernon, Jake and Alvin Myers; three sisters – Elsie Rader, Lora and Francie Myers; and two children – Michael Dale and Judy Christine Myers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Riley Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
