Stephen Garrett

(From Simpson Funeral Home)

Stephen J. Garrett, 64, of Carthage, MO, passed away at Mercy Joplin on September 1, 2017 after a year-long battle with kidney cancer.

Steve was born in Carthage, Missouri, on May 22, 1953 and was the son of John and Barbara (Combs) Garrett of Carthage, MO, who survive him.

He married the love of his life, Johnna Packer of Webb City on August 25, 1973. They had one son, Ryan, and recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Steve graduated from Carthage High School in 1971. He then attended Mid-America Nazarene College in Olathe, KS, for a year. He worked for Schreiber for 45 years, the majority of time as a mechanic in maintenance. He considered his long-time friends and co-workers at Schreiber his second family. Steve enjoyed working on cars, golfing, softball, bowling, fishing, computers, watching sports (especially his beloved New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys), fixing anything and everything, and spending time with his family – sharing meals, playing games for hours, and generally having fun. One of his greatest joys was his granddaughter, Ellie. He loved going to Springfield to watch her in her musical endeavors and sports. Steve’s life was greatly blessed by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and he viewed every day as a gift from God. Steve is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Johnna Garrett of Carthage, MO; son, Ryan and Ashley Garrett of Springfield, MO; one precious granddaughter, Ellie Grace Garrett of Springfield, MO; brother, Tony and Terri Garrett of Carthage, MO; sisters-in-law, Loudeene and John (Denny) Spencer and of Wylie, TX, Debbi Ball of Joplin, MO, and Gail and Steve Bliesner of Fort Dodge, IA; as well as his nieces and nephews, Misty and Jeff Phillips and family, Brandy Spencer, Corey Bliesner, Trisha and Dustin Moore and family, and Shelli and Mike Merritt and family. Pallbearers are his son, Ryan Garrett, brother, Tony Garrett, brothers-in-law, John (Denny) Spencer and Steve Bliesner, cousin Jack Combs, Jr., and nephew, Corey Bliesner.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 5 from 12:00pm-2:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City, MO, immediately followed by graveside services at Carterville Cemetery. His son, Ryan Garrett, will be speaking in memoriam. Visit www.simpsonfh.com for online condolences.
