(From Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home)Harlan Lavern Schnake, 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at 6:40 pm, on Thursday, May 20, 2021. He was born June 13, 1950, to Lavern and Clara Schnake, Harlan grew up on his family’s farm with his eight siblings.
He was a devoted and loving dad, Papa, brother, and friend whose greatest joy was his family. He was a cowboy through and through, spending most of his time training and riding horses, team penning and raising cattle.
He made his living as a welder and leaves behind miles of pipe fence built for farmers all across the state. Harlan attended every single game, recital, school event, and activity – not just for his own family, but those of his friends and “adopted” extra kids. He never met a stranger and he made everyone feel welcome.
Harlan is survived by his two daughters, Tracey Estes of Mt. Vernon and her husband Shane, and Lisa Helm of Pineville and her husband Sammy. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nat Wachowski-Estes of Tulsa, their wife Jennie, and daughter Harlan; Megan Calvert of Mt. Vernon, her husband Dustin and their boys Anderson, Silas, Joey, Asher, and Israel; Samantha Haymaker of Pineville, her husband Doug, their son Karson, and daughter Charlotte; Taylor Helm of Springdale, her fiancé Jonathan and their sons Konner and Weston; Cloee Helm of Pineville; Marissa Estes of Fayetteville and fiancé Gavin; and Gracie Estes of Mt. Vernon. And his brother Leon of Warrensburg and his wife Renee, his sisters Allene Roach of Joplin and Peggy Short of Mt. Vernon and her husband Terry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Ruth, Geneva, LeeRoy, Lois, David, and granddaughter Whitney.
A funeral service under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at the Covenant Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at the Zion Memorial Cemetery, southwest of Mt. Vernon.
