Jean Short

Jean Doyce (Harms) Short, 91, of Newburgh, Indiana, formerly of Joplin, Missouri and Wichita, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 1, 2023. She was born in Thayer, Kansas on April 12, 1932 in a farmhouse. Her family moved to Jackson, Mississippi shortly after her birth and lived there until they moved to Wichita, Kansas where she attended and graduated from Planeview High School. 

 Her senior year she was nominated and voted to be football queen. She met her future husband Donald E. “Slick” Short during her high school years while he was attending Kansas University.






 

They married on July 3rd, 1952 and made their home in Wichita where Don worked for Derby/Coastal Oil for 43 years. Jean worked various jobs through her life including time with New York Life, Boeing and a family business Airkem. She was very involved in the churches she and her family attended and spoke at large Woman’s Conferences giving her testimony of being raised by deaf/mute parents.

She and Don moved to Joplin, Mo after his retirement. They attended and served at Southwest City Full Gospel Church where their son and his wife were pastors. Her last 7 years were lived in Newburgh, Indiana at Bell Oaks Assisted Living Facility.

She was preceded in death by her parents George & Clara Harms, her brother George Harms Jr. and her husband of 59 years Donald E. Short.

She is survived by her only son, Mark G. Short and daughter-in-law Lisa of Newburgh, Indiana.







Her three grandsons, Brock A. Short and his wife Ashton of Bentonville, Ark., Blake G. Short and his wife Katherine of Cave Springs, Ark. and Beau J. Short and his wife Blair of Manor, Texas. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Carson, Rory, Brimlee, Calvin, Collins, Bentley, and Brae “Slick” who is coming in January.

Jean’s life was marked by many friendships and experiences that she was blessed to have. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Cemetery, 12100 E. 13th Street N, Wichita, Kansas 67206. The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m.
