(From Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home)Martin Frederick Wagner, age 78, of Sarcoxie and Pierce City, Missouri area, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, with his family by his side.
He was born in Joplin Missouri on April 26, 1945, son of the late Frederick and Bernice (Kutz) Wagner and a lifetime member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He graduated from Sarcoxie High School in 1963 and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Agricultural Education in 1967.
Martin married Jean Johnson on June 24, 1967 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Joplin, Missouri sharing fifty-six wonderful years of memories. Martin was a Vo-Ag Teacher and FFA advisor after college and taught many students starting in Glasgow, Missouri, Aurora, Miller, and then settled on the Sarcoxie Prairie and spent his last twenty years at Sarcoxie High School where he also taught all four of his children. He was very active in the local and State FFA communities and received multiple awards during his time. He was very proud of all his students and their accomplishments and enjoyed seeing them whenever he had the chance. Martin, Jean, and their three sons are local farmers and were proud to have been honored with a Century Farm in Newton County.
Martin was active in many local organizations, Missouri Pork Producers, MFA Oil, Missouri State Fair Board, local city and county fairs, and the Spring River Pulling Association. After retiring from teaching, besides farming, he repaired tractors for area farmers. He pulled tractors along with his sons and campaigned two tractors later continuing with his grandson’s pulling tractor. Martin’s favorite past time was spending time at home with his family and watching his children and grandchildren in their various activities and closed every evening reading books about tractors and farming.
Martin is survived by his wife, Jean Wagner of Pierce City, Missouri; three sons, Randy (Cara) Wagner of Sarcoxie, Missouri, Scott (Rhonda) Wagner, and Russell (Skeeter) Wagner both of Pierce City, Missouri; one daughter Renee’ (Kyle) Bunney of Vero Beach, Florida.; eight grandchildren; one great- grandson; two brothers, Neil Wagner of Pierce City Missouri and David Wagner of Sarcoxie Missouri and many other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Bernice Wagner; his sister Dorothy Witt and his great-grand daughter Lainey Snyder.
Rosary will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at St. Agnes Catholic Church on the Sarcoxie Prairie, with Father Matthew Rehrauer officiating. Those honoring his life by servicing as pallbearers are Chandler Olmstead, Daniel Wagner, Bradley Wagner, Ty Wagner, Bryan Wagner and Colton Simonson. Honorary pallbearers will be Levi Snyder and Kyle Bunney. Burial will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Agnes Catholic Church and Cemetery or Childrens Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri in care of the funeral home.
