Sam Burkhalter

(From Parker Mortuary)

Robert “Sam” Samuel Burkhalter Jr., age 76, of Jasper, Missouri, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Landmark Hospital.

Sam was born on September 29, 1947 in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late union of Robert Sr. and Mildred (Ludwig) Burkhalter. He married Sharon Burgess on August 3, 1992 in Oronogo, MO. He obtained his associates in nursing from Orange County College in New Jersey.

Sam was a proud United States Medic for the Navy and also served in the Vietnam War as a Marine Corp Medic. He was one of the first men to board the first nuclear submarine. He led the Reserves 5th Army Rifle Team. Sam was a very dedicated and honorable man.

Once returning home, he enjoyed going to antique malls, fishing, canoeing, and blacksmithing. He spent many days traveling with Sharon across country, trying new foods and exploring new places. The two of them often took adventures on four-wheelers exploring the mountains and sometimes sliding down mountains, by accident of course.

Sam had a passion for Indian art, pottery, and collecting unique pieces of art. He also enjoyed being on the range shooting targets, but never became a big hunter. He loved sitting on the flower filled Veranda surveying all our hard work making this land a beautiful place to call home. Sam was a generous and thoughtful man and never turned down anyone that needed help.

Sam is survived by his wife, Sharon; five children, Melissa Johnson and husband, Jeff, Chris Dalton and wife, Charli, Christian Burkhalter, Jennifer Burkhalter, and Sonja Burkhalter; one sister, Ginnie Moore and husband, Bob; one favorite niece, Deb Adams; three grandchildren, Mica Dalton and fiancé, Heath Berry, Crystal Dalton, and Christian Dalton; one great-granddaughter, Claire Green; and his fur babies, Barack Burkhalter, Hillary Burkhalter, and Honey Burkhalter.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Joplin Humane Society.

Cremation arrangements are under the special care of Parker Mortuary.
