(From Carson-Wall Funeral Home)Regina Marie (Richard) Babcock Edson, 89, of Parsons, died at 6:25 p.m., Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.
She was born September 19, 1934, in Walnut, to Eugene and Mabel (Purdon) Richard. She grew up on the family farm with her four sisters and working the farm with her father. She attended and graduated from Walnut High School in 1952.
At the age of 18 Regina moved to Parsons and worked as an aide at the Mercy Hospital. She then worked several years at Hallmark Card Factory, then at the Broderick Co. She started working at the Montgomery Ward store in the material department and later trained in the paint department. When the Montgomery Ward store moved to the Belmont Square Center she moved there and ran the catalog and paint department. In 1980 she went to work at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center and worked different areas until her retirement in 2000. Later she returned to work at the PSHTC for a few more years. She also worked at the Big Brutus tourist site for several years and helped with weddings at the top of the shovel.
Regina and her husband, Larry Edson, owned and ran La Gina’s in Fremont, Nebraska with Larry’s mother.
She enjoyed baking and made pies for many people. She was also a seamstress and did alterations for many years until September of 2022, when she became ill. She did alterations for the Lambert-Duffy-Melone store for several years. She enjoyed visiting with people and helping anyway she could. She altered multiple wedding dresses and prom dresses over the years, resulting in taking care of multiple generations in several families. She loved seeing those smiles on their faces.
Regina loved her church (St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s) and was very active in the prayer groups and the Altar Society. She did her turn at the different officer positions. She was a member of the Lady Elks. She thoroughly enjoyed playing pinochle with several of her church friends for years and was the last of that group.
For twenty years she was a pink lady at the Labette County Medical Center. She was a blood donor for the Red Cross and received her ten gallon pin.
She enjoyed following the sports of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed all sports as long as one of her family was playing. She also was an avid fan of the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs.
On June 21, 1952 Regina and Donald Lee Babcock were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut and established their home in Parsons. She lived in Parsons her entire married life except for a few months when they lived in Muskogee, OK, and then returned to Parsons to raise their family. Don worked for the M-K-T Railroad most of his life and died May 23, 1980. They had six children and five are still living.
On January 31, 1982 Regina married Larry Dean Edson at the former First United Methodist Church in Parsons. Later they renewed their vows at St. Patrick’s Church in Parsons. On June 1, 2020 Larry preceded her in death.
Regina’s survivors include three sons, Don Babcock (Judy) Richard Babcock (Sandy) and Ernest Babcock, all of Parsons; two daughters, Cathy Swearengin (Roger) of Grove, OK and Linda Beavers (Art) of Wichita; eleven grandchildren, Darren Babcock (Nicole), Julie Babcock (Andy), Brian Swearengin (Leszli), Leigh Swearengin Harvey (Dr. Ben), Levi Bailey, Lynn Bailey, Lance Bailey, Michael Babcock (Emily), Melissa Babcock Brinkman (A.J.), Christopher Babcock and John Babcock; nine great-grandchildren, Arren (Destiny), Jena, Racie, Anna, Abbey, Dane, Boyd, Layla, Alba, Kade and Kendall; a sister, Katherine Stonerock of Girard; a brother-in-law, Loyd Elbrader of Neosho, MO; multiple very loving nieces, nephews, cousins and a special daughter, Star King. Other significant family members are Penny Babcock and Mike and Kayla Beavers and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, her daughter Anne Marie Babcock, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann Elbrader,
George Stonerock, Pauline and Al Carpenter and Margarette and Jim Eberhart.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, December 18, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m., Sunday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
