Doris Dickens

(From Parker Mortuary)

Doris Dickens was born April 29 of 1933. She went to be with Jesus November 30, 2023. She was born and raised in Carthage Missouri and was preceded in death by a son.

Doris was known by many through her small business - a long-time home operated seamstress. You could find her in the yellow pages as the “Stitch Witch."

She started her alterations career in the 1950's at Ramsey's in Carthage and went on to work at Newman’s Department Store and Montgomery Ward before going out on her own.

She was incredibly hard working and kept herself on strict hours from 8-5 Mon-Fri until she was 87 years old. She served as a very popular seamstress to the public servants - police, fire, and military. Her precision and understanding of the placement of bars, stars, and medals was unmatched.

Doris was never short on opinion, never hesitating to let you know what she was thinking. “Outspoken and honest” is how one friend described her. Her clients were her family, and she loved being part of their lives. She said she “lived and traveled” through their stories. Her faith in Jesus was expressed and real. As her health was failing her confidence in her savior grew stronger. Doris’s spunky spirit will be missed by many.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri. There are no services planned at this time.
