(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Berna Sue Wells (Bernie) age 92, of Joplin, Missouri passed away peacefully in her residence on March 3, 2025.
Born December 2, 1932, in Berryville Arkansas to Alpha and Edna Baughman, Bernie later moved with her family to Colorado Springs, Colorado. She graduated from Colorado College with a degree in sociology. Bernie married Richard (Dick) Wells on August 21, 1955, and together they raised two daughters and celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Bernie's life is best characterized by her genuine love of people. Dick's career required multiple moves over three decades. She embraced each move as an adventure and enjoyed reminiscing of their time in Michigan, Indiana, Kansas, Wisconsin and Illinois. Every move added to her collection of lifelong friends. Dick often said any career success he enjoyed was largely due to Bernie's enthusiastic agreement for each move. She knew the names and life circumstances of many clerks at stores she frequented and was known to take small gifts to several who needed encouragement.
Bernie's life was also characterized by her enjoyment of simple pleasures. Her laugh was contagious and especially so watching classic comedians like Tim Conway and Carol Burnett. Dick provided a constant source of humor throughout their life together. His quick wit kept her giggling much to the amusement of all their grandchildren. Among the things that brought her joy: brilliant red cardinals that frequented her bird feeders, fighting squirrels (though never able to fully claim victory), dark chocolate, a good cheesecake, any animal video, all things grandchildren, and a clearance rack. As Dick said for years, she never paid retail.
Bernie was a woman of deep faith. She gave her heart to the Lord as a young girl and sought out Bible studies wherever they lived. Research of the Old Testament and their 1984 trip to the Holy Land were especially meaningful to her. The worn pages of her Bible and journals full of notes are lasting reminders of her love for the Lord and for His Word.
In addition to her husband, Bernie is survived by her daughters Kathleen Mallo (Jon) and Marie Moeller; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 11 at Mason-Woodard Chapel in Joplin, Missouri.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason Woodard Mortuary & Crematory – Joplin, MO.
