(From Derfelt Funeral Home)
Jackson Ray, 87 of Joplin, MO, left this world on a beautiful spring day, March 25, 2025. Jack was born on June 10, 1937 to the late Sam Ray and Minnie Long Ray in Quapaw, OK.
Jack was an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation from his mamas side and also celebrated his Lebanese side from his papa. He graduated from the Quapaw High School at the top of his class and served as class president. He went on to serve in the Navy and was based in San Diego and Chicago before returning to Quapaw, OK and earning a B.S. Education degree from Missouri Southern.
He taught elementary education before becoming a general contractor and business entrepreneur. He had a love of writing short stories, poems, and even a children’s book about a camel without a hump. Following his Native American culture, he also enjoyed creating beaded jewelry.
Jack was a beloved husband and is survived by his wife Judy Ray of the home and a loving father to Kelli Weaver (husband Todd Weaver) of Baxter Springs, KS, his daughter from his first marriage. He is survived by his sisters Jacqueline Gates and husband Fred, and Helen French.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Albert, Sam, and Frank; seven sisters: Mickey, Anna Mae, Margaret, Grace, and Gloria. He was a wonderful papa, loyal brother and uncle, beautiful friend, and loving surrogate dad and mentor to many. He was often found volunteering and donating to his community. He will be greatly missed here but we know there is a joyous reunion in Heaven.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 28, 2025 at the Lowell Cemetery. Pastor Geoff Buffalo will officiate. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
