Russell Hively

Russell K. Hively, age 82, of Neosho, Missouri, passed away on March 24, 2025. He was born on December 12, 1942, in Tyler, Minnesota, to Kenneth and Veta (Hillquist) Hively.

Russell married Rita Kay James on December 14, 1963, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They shared a loving marriage until Rita’s passing on July 27, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Rita.








He is survived by his son, Russell Kenneth Hively (Sabra) of Neosho, Missouri; his brother Todd Hively (Judy) of Fargo, North Dakota; and five nieces and nephews.

A dedicated member of the community, Russell devoted much of his time and energy to local organizations such as the Neosho Lions Club, Friends of the Neosho National Fish Hatchery, and the Newtonia Battlefield Protection Agency. His contributions to these causes reflect his passion for service and preserving the history and natural beauty of his community.

Russell was a graduate of Russell High School in Russell, Minnesota, class of 1960, and went on to attend Mankato State University. He earned his degree from Southwest Minnesota State University in 1970. He served three years in the U.S. Army and later taught English at Echo High School in Echo, Minnesota, for two years. His teaching career spanned 25 years at Neosho High School, where he dedicated his talents to educating the youth of Neosho until his retirement in 1998.

In his spare time, Russell enjoyed furniture repair and refinishing, as well as reading and writing for various newspapers and magazines. His passion for the written word and craftsmanship was evident throughout his life.








In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of the Neosho National Fish Hatchery in care of Clark Funeral Home, 312 S Wood St, Neosho, MO 64850.

In accordance with Russell’s wishes, no public services will be held.

He will be remembered for his dedication to family, education, and community service, as well as for the deep love and respect he had for those around him.
